letter 86

Bishop Mark Webb
Upper New York Annual Conference

September 22, 2013

Dear Bishop Webb,

Please be an advocate for justice in the case of the Rev. Steve Heiss and all for whom he has become a symbol.  We humans—and especially those of us in the Church—too often complicate what our Lord intended to be simple. Full, open acceptance.

The Church has one purpose: to share broadly and universally the Love that we acknowledge when we profess our acceptance of God’s Grace and Redemption.  It is not for us to meter out that Grace, nor is it our burden to determine the worthiness of our sisters and brothers to receive Redemption.

I join in speaking with the many who deeply believe our lives are richer and our faith is stronger when our churches are inclusive and welcoming in every way.  I believe the sacraments of the church, including marriage and ordination, should be available to all.  To address the issue more directly, I believe persons of the same gender who are in committed relationships and seek the blessings of marriage should be welcome to full pastoral services in the United Methodist Church.  Please lead the way.

Let us be the open door to justice, not the barricade against it.

Sincerely,

Linda Loomis
P.S. I can no longer remain in Lay Leadership ministry, since I will continue to speak in favor of Love.
