letter 56

September 17, 2013
Bishop Mark Webb
Upper New York Annual Conference
324 University Ave., 3rd Floor
Syracuse, NY 13210
Dear Bishop Webb, I write to let you know that I will be praying for you on September 20th, specifically for wisdom on the meeting with Steve Heiss. I know that we are to uphold the laws of our denomination and the actions of our General Conference, but I have disagreed with the laws and decisions of General Conference on this issue of gender orientation for many years. I believe through personal experience and study, God, through the Holy Spirit, has made clear to me that a person’s sexual orientation is a natural gift from God and therefore is not something we humans can say is right or wrong. So, like Peter, in Acts, what God has created and called good, we cannot declare wrong or evil. Unfortunately, the church is moving ever so slowly to accept the truth. I see what Steve has done is say, “Here I stand, I can do no other.” I believe we should do no other than respect him for this faith stand.

Sincerely yours,

Merle Showers
